OPT全称为Optional Practical Training，是美国政府授予拿F1签证学生的校外工作许可，它是让外籍学生将所学专业知识在校外运用于实践的一种临时工作许可。OPT（post-completion OPT）的有效时长根据专业的不同而不等：普通专业的OPT是12个月，而STEM（science科学、technology技术、engineering工程、mathematics数学）类专业的学生，可以申请延长OPT期限到29个月。
自2011年起，美国进一步扩大了可以延长到29个月的OPT期限的专业范围，新增了农业学、心理学、教育学、动物学、食品科学、环境科学、林业学、地理信息学等50个专业，这对于中国留学生来说，是一个重大利好消息。美国OPT可申请29个月实习的专业详细如下：
